THROUGH 1515Z May 22, 2006.

Upper and Middle Mississippi Valley/Upper Great Lakes/Ohio Valley/Ontario:
A large area of light to moderate smoke visible in GOES-10 imagery is
moving south off the ridge across southern Ontario into eastern Minnesota
and Iowa. The smoke spreads into Wisconsin, Michigan and southward into
Illinois and western Indiana. The smoke is also mixed in with haze.
The smoke source is most likely from the numerous fires that were burning
across the northern Plains, Saskatchewan and Manitoba last week.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
