DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z June 02, 2006.

Alaska:
Thin smoke from Siberian fires continues to be seen in early morning
visible imagery covering the Northwest coastal area of the NW Territories,
N Yukon Territory north of the Peel River into Alaska. Currently the
thin smoke can be seen between the Brooks Range and Alaska Range with the
most dense area NW of Denali National Park.  The thin smoke continues SW
to cover points points between the Yukon River Delta and the Aleutlian
Range on the Alaskan Penisula.  The smoke in the Bering Sea is difficult
to distinguish between cirrus and cloud cover.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
