DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z June 23, 2006

Southwest:

Fires over west central New Mexico have produced a plume of smoke that
starts in the Gilla Wilderness area then spreads south to Silver City
then west into SE Arizonia around Benson.

Canada:
In Canada a large pool of smoke continues in the area south of Lake
Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan. Bands of smoke are moving away from
this pool, northwest to Eastern Great Slave Lake and southeast across
the Lac La Ronge region to northern portions of Lake Winnipeg in Central
Manitoba.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
