DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0232Z June 25, 2006.

Arizona:
The large wildfire near Jacob Lake in the Kaibab National Forest of
northern Coconino county continues to produce a very dense plume of smoke
that is fanning out in an east/west direction. The densest portion of
the plume was seen drifting east/southeast at sunset towards northern
Navajo county.

New Mexico:
The persistent wildfire over southern Catron county was earlier seen
producing a rather dense smoke plume oriented from northern Graham
county in Arizona to southern Cibola county in western New Mexico.
Since that time though, widespread cloud cover has completely obscured
the wildfire preventing any further smoke detection.

Canada:
A tremendous outbreak of wildfires continues this evening near Lake
Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan and northeast Alberta. An extremely
large and dense smoke plume was seen stretching from the fire activity
over the southern Lake Athabasca region towards Reindeer Lake.
The plume then oriented itself in a north/south orientation towards
Lake Winnipeg/Lake Winnipegosis and further extending towards the United
States/Canadian border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
