DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1640Z July 6, 2006.

Central/Eastern U.S and West/Central Canada:
The massive amount of wildfires across northern/central British Columbia,
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba continue to produce a moderately dense
to very dense area of smoke that nearly covers all four provinces and
moves into southern Yukon Territory and western Ontario. The enormous
area of smoke has also moved southeast into the U.S. with the most
dense portion of smoke moving south through Wisconsin and into Illinois.
Less dense portions of smoke are also visible in the Dakotas, reaching
as far south as Arkansas/Tennessee and moves in a northeast direction
up the Atlantic Coast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
