DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1745Z July 8, 2006.

Cloud cover is hindering satellite based detection of the fires that
have been seen for days in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and
Manitoba. Smoke can be seen in a thin swath from West Virginia through
western Pennsylvania and New England to central Maine before becoming
obscured by clouds. Some residual thin to moderate smoke is also visible
in the morning imagery over Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
