DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z August 5, 2006.


Washington/N Idaho/Montana/S Saskatchewan:
Dense smoke from the Tripod Complex north and NE of Twisp, WA along the
Okanogan Range is starting to move NE and E as the winds shift from NW
to W. This is covering Okanogan county east Chewuch River and W of 119W.
Dense smoke that was moving W and SW extends between 47N and 48N from 120W
across E WA, N ID and W MT to 109W or near Midale in Phillips county,
MT before the 35km wide plume of moderately dense smoke is pulled NE
and then N across NE MT, into the plains of Saskatchewan just ahead of
an approaching midlevel shortwave trof and sfc cold front.

NW California/Oregon:
Thin smoke from the large fire complexes across NW California including:
the Hunter, Happy Camp, Bar, Kingsley, and Orleans fires, is much thinner
today though located in the same area just offshore of NW CA/SW OR then
moving due E across the southern 2/3rds of Oregon.

Northwest Territories:
Thin to moderately dense smoke from fires along the southern and western
shores of Great Bear Lake currently covers the northern portions of the
Keith and Smith arms of the Lake along with the peninsula in between
and about 40km N of the Smith Arm in the NW Territory.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
