DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z August 8, 2006.

Canada:
Wildfires to both the southwest and southeast of Great Bear Lake are
producing moderately dense to very dense plumes of smoke that are moving
across the lake and moving slightly north to northeast past the lake.

Washington/British Columbia:
The massive wildfire located in Okanogan National Forest continues to
spread and burn across northern Washington. It is producing a very dense
plume of smoke that is moving northeast into southern/central British
Columbia where it accumulating more smoke from smaller wildfires across
British Colubmia. This giant area of moderately dense to very dense
smoke is visible moving directly east across central/southern Alberta,
Saskatchewan and Manitoba where it then turns to the southeast across
most of Minnesota and parts of western Wisconsin. The most dense portions
of smoke are found in southern British Colubmia, but the smoke that has
reached Minnesota is still at a moderately dense level.

Minnesota:
A fire in Lake of the Woo county is producing a moderately dense plume
of smoke that is fanning out to the north and contributing to enormous
area of smoke already covering that region.

Idaho:
Several wildfires in central and southern Idaho are producing dense to
very dense plumes of smoke that are moving directly to the north and just
reaching the Montana border. Other wildfires further north in Idaho have
been burning all day, but no smoke is visible due to thick cloud cover.

Montana:
A fire located in Glacier county of northwest Montana is producing a
moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving to the northeast into
southern Alberta.

California:
A fire in Mendocino county on the northwestern coast is producing a
moderately dense plume of smoke that is fanning out to the west out over
the Pacific Ocean. Smaller fires in Tulare county of southern California
are producing light plumes of smoke that are moving to the north.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
