DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z August 12, 2006.

Montana/south of western Canada/:
The very large wildfire located in Okanogan National Forest (Tripod
Complex) continues to spread and burn across northern Washington and
thick smoke can be seen moving north from the fire into southern British
Columbia. The fire in western Glacier county of Montana started burning
this afternoon and produced a thin to moderately dense plume of smoke
that is moving northeast to southern Alberta province of Canada.

Oregon/Idaho/Wyoming/Montana/California:
A fire in eastern Linn county of Oregon is producing a moderately dense
plume of smoke that is moving mainly east along the border between
Jefferson and Deschutes counties to the north of Crook county in
Oregon. Another fire along the border of Deschutes and Lane counties in
Oregon is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke that has fanned
out to the east and covered central Jefferson, northwestern Crook,
and northern Deschutes counties. A bunch of fires in northern Valley,
western Custer and eastern Washington counties of Idaho are burning
crazy and producing locally very dense plumes of smoke that are moving
northeast all the way to southwestern Montana; there, the smoke from fires
or Idaho combining with the smoke from a fire along the border of Lewis
And Clark and Powell counties in Montana producing a moderately dense
plume of smoke moving east covers from central Idaho to southwestern
Montana. The other fire in Petroleum county of Montana is producing a
narrow plume of moderately smoke that is scanning from north to south
around the fire spot. The smoke is combined with very dense plumes of
smoke which is moving northeast and produced from two fires in southern
Park county and along the border between Teton and Fermont counties
of Wyoming. The smoke from those fires above covers all of Big Horn
counties in both Montana and Wyoming, portion of Park, Teton, Hot Springs
counties in Wyoming, and Yellowstone, Rosebuo, Garfield, and Treasure
counties in Montana. Two fires in northwestern corner of Trinity county
and northwestern Mendocino county in northern California are producing

and the smoke covered the following counties in California: Siskiyou,
Humboldt, Trinity, Mendocino, and Glenn counties. A fire in eastern
Sierra and another two fires in eastern Tulare county of California
are producing moderately dense to locally dense plumes of smoke that are

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
