DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z August 24, 2006

Northern Great Basin through Upper Great Lakes/Ohio Valley region:
Fires in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming are
continuing to create massive amounts of smoke over the northern half of
the country and south/central Canada. The area of smoke is moderately
dense with locally denser areas in immediate fire locales. The densest
areas are seen over southeastern Idaho, south/east Montana, and central
Wyoming. Clouds are obscuring the Northern Plains, but it is assumed
that the smoke is blanketing that area as well, continuing south into
the Ohio River Valley.

Northwest California:
Fires in Siskiyou and Trinity continue to produce locally dense smoke
in the valleys close to the fires and moderately dense smoke.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
