DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1520Z September 14, 2006

California:
The large wildfires located in the national forest's of northwest
California continue to emit dense smoke this morning that is now south
of the fires. However, we cannot tell how far to the south it goes,
since clouds covers most of northern California.

Ontario/Quebec/Manitoba/Great Lakes/Ohio Valley/the Plains/:
A large amount of wildfires spreading through southern Ontario, just
north of Lake Superior, and south of Lake Nipigon, Idaho, western
Montana, and Washington have produced a lot of dense plumes of smoke
which contributes the large smoke coverage of this morning on the areas
mentioned on the title.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
