THROUGH 0130Z September 18, 2006

California:
Big fires in Siskiyo and Trinity counties of northern California are
still burning and producing moderately dense to dense plumes of smoke
swirling around and has covered northern half of Trinity county.

The large fires in Ventura County have produced a large amount of dense
smoke that is moving west SW across Ventura and Santa Barbara counties to
the Pacific. Another fire along the border of Riverside and San Bernardino
is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke moving southwest across
Orange county to the Pacific. The densest portion of the overall smoke
from the fires mentioned above covered all Santa Barbara, Ventura,
Orange, and western Riverside counties; the thin portion of the smoke
influences Los Angeles.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
