DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z September 19, 2006

California:
A very large wildfire continues to burn over the northern portion of
Ventura county this evening. An extremely large smoke plume associated
with this fire covers a large portion of southern California. The densest
portion of the smoke plume extends from the point source over northern
Ventura county and extends into extreme northeast Santa Barbara and
southwest San Luis Obispo counties. The plume then drifts northeast
through central Kern county into southeast Tulare county. Surrounding the
extremely dense smoke plume was a large area of moderately to locally
dense smoke approximately 150-250 miles wide extending along an axis
from the offshore waters to near Point Conception to Inyo and northern
San Bernardino counties.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
