DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z September 27, 2006

California/Arizona/Utah:
The very large wildfire continuing to burn in Ventura county produced an
area of thick smoke last night that moved east across southern California.
The area of smoke has now stretched into southwestern Utah and parts
of western/central Arizona. The fire is currently emitting an area of
dense smoke that is moving north into the Coastal Ranges and the San
Joaquin Valley and as far north as Gilroy, California.

The fires burning in northern California in the Salmon and Siskiyou
Mountains (Siskiyou and Trinity counties) are producing an area of dense
smoke moving north along the California coast and into western Oregon.
The smoke in the far northern sections of western Oregon has thinned out.

Idaho:
A wildfire in the Clearwater National Forest is emitting a moderately
dense plume of smoke moving east SE across Clearwater county and
northeastern Idaho county, then into parts of western Montana (county
of Ravalli).

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
