DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z September 28, 2006

Updated to include...Arizona/New Mexico: Early morning visible imagery
also showed a swath of mainly thin smoke covering a portion of central and
southern Arizona as well as central and southern New Mexico. This smoke
likely originated from the Ventura County fires in southern California as
well as some contribution from at least one fire in southern Coconino
County of north central Arizona and two fires in Yavapai County of
central Arizona. Further contribution from a fire in northern Baja is
also possible.

California/Oregon:
Thin to moderately dense smoke from the fires in northwestern California
can be seen moving up Oregon's western coast, with lighter smoke moving
into central Oregon.

Light smoke likely from the fire in Ventura county can be seen spreading
northward throughout central California. Some of this thin smoke appears
to have moved across the San Francisco-Oakland region.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
