DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 2, 2006

California/Oregon:
The wildfires burning in the Salmon-Trinity Alps Wilderness and to the
north in the Marble Mountain Wilderness (Siskiyou and Trinity counties)
are producing an area of moderately dense smoke (thick around the fires)
moving along the Pacific Coast into southwest and central Oregon.
The full extent of the smoke is hard to see due to cloud cover.

Washington:
A wildfire in the southern section of the Okanogan National Forest
(border of Okanogan and Douglas counties – northwest of the town of
Bridgeport) is emitting an area of moderately dense smoke moving east
into Lincoln and Grant counties.

Idaho:
The wildfire burning in the Clearwater National Forest (border of
Clearwater/Shoshone counties) is producing an area of moderately dense
smoke moving east into western Montana in the counties of Mineral and
Sanders.

The wildfire burning in Boundary County (Kaniksu National Forest)
is producing a small dense smoke plume moving to the northeast.
Cloud cover is blocking the full view of smoke.

Multiple wildfires burning in the Boise National Forest (Boise and
Valley counties) are producing moderately dense smoke plumes moving to
the northeast. Clouds once again block the full view of smoke.

Georgia:
A agricultural/prescribed fire burning in Echols county (near the town
of Tarver) is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke moving south
into Hamilton County Florida.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
