DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z October 21, 2006

Northeast Texas/Southern Oklahoma:
Widespread fire activity was noted over northeast Texas this evening. The
only smoke that was observed on satellite imagery from this activity was
from fire activity over northwestern Harrison county and over northwest
Titus county. Both plumes were seen drifting northwest. The plume from
the fire over Titus county was mostly thin and was seen crossing the
Red River into Choctaw county in Oklahoma. The smoke plume from the
fire just south of the Lake O' the Pines over northwest Harrison county
was seen approaching Camp county. The plume appeared much more dense
compared to its northern counterpart.

Olympic Peninsula of Washington/Vancouver Island:
Scattered to widespread fire activity over the Olympic Peninsula of
Washington and over Vancouver Island was producing numerous smoke plumes
that were seen drifting west into the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Most of the smoke plumes were moderately to at times locally dense.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
