DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z October 28, 2006

California/Northwest:
A large fire in western Riverside County in southern California is
producing an extensive amount of dense smoke that moved to the northwest
over SW Bernardino/Los Angeles Counties and also fanned out to the SW
off the coast approximately 320 miles.

Thin smoke drifted southward from the small fires in central California
while fires in Oregon, SW Washington and W Idaho produced light and
moderately dense smoke that moved mostly to the north and northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
