DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0135Z October 29, 2006

California/Baja:
The large area of smoke along the west coast of California and Baja stems
from fires located in Riverside county, California and several fires
along the west coast of Baja. The smoke has fanned out to the west of
the fires and is moving up the coast to the north and to the south. It
is highly likely that San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Jose
are all being affected by this smoke. As the smoke travels further north,
it seems to be moving back inland.

Oregon/California:
Fires along the southern border of Oregon and northern border of
California are producing plumes of moderately dense smoke that is mainly
staying close to the source, but some of the lighter smoke has moved
off of Oregon's southwest coast.

Idaho:
Fires in north and south central Idaho are producing light to moderately
dense plumes of smoke that are moving to the east and northeast.

Texas:
A fire in Castro county of north central Texas is producing a moderately
dense plume of smoke that extends to the east.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
