DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z November 17, 2006

Texas

Fires in Calhoun County and Matagorda County produced smoke plumes that
extended to the southeast for 174 km and 150 km, respectively, into the
Gulf of Mexico.

Southwest

A fire in McKinley County, New Mexico, produced a narrow plume that
extended 130 km to the east. A blaze in Gila County, Arizona, resulted
in a plume that extended 100 km to the east southeast while one in
Coconino County generated a plume that extended 90 km to the east.
Smoke was not particularly dense with any of these fires and the plumes
were relatively narrow.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
