DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z December 22, 2006

New Mexico:
A fire in northern Otero County of south central New Mexico was emitting
a thin smoke plume which spread in an eastward direction and into the
southern portion of Lincoln County and the southwestern portion of
Chaves County.

Remainder of the US:
A large storm system was responsible for a large amount of cloudiness
across the eastern half of the country which greatly hindered fire and
smoke detection from satellite imagery. More extensive cloudiness covered
parts of the western US including northern and central California,
Nevada, eastern Oregon, and Idaho, limiting fire and smoke detection
there as well.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
