DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2315Z December 28, 2006

Florida:
A pair of fires in Okaloosa county in the panhandle, one in the northwest
of the county the other in the southwest, produced thin plumes of smoke
this afternoon that drifted to the west northwest into Santa Rosa and
extreme southern Escambia counties.

Northern Mexico and Texas:
The major winter storm that is afftecting the central and southern
Rockies has caused strong winds to develop over much of northern Mexico
and Texas. This has caused areas of blowing dust. A large area of
blowing dust was originating from northern Tamaulipas state south of
Matamoros and moving to the northwest, reaching to at least Laredo by
sunset. Another area was originating from eastern Chihuahua state and
moving to the northeast into the Big Bend area of Texas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
