DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z January 6, 2007

Southern California:
A large area of dust/sand is moving south across southern California
and moving into the Gulf of California, Baja California and the Pacific.
A smaller area of dust/sand originating just north of the Los Angeles
area on the Los Angeles and Kern county border is moving southwest
across the region and San Clemente and Santa Catalina Islands off the
California coast.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
