DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z January 11, 2007

Southeastern and south central U.S.:
There continue to be numerous agricultural fires in Virginia, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi,
Louisiana, eastern Texas and eastern Oklahoma. A small subset of
these fires is producing large enough areas of smoke to be seen in
satellite imagery. Light (or occasionally light to moderate) narrow
smoke plumes are associated with about 15 fires, ten of which are
in Georgia. In general, most of the smoke plumes extend southward but
those in Louisiana and Texas extend northward. A fire in extreme western
Bibb County, Alabama is producing a light to moderate smoke plume that
extends westward. An especially long but still narrow plume of light
smoke extends toward the northwest from a fire south of Sabine Lake near
the Lousiana-Texas border.

California:
A fire in Santa Barbara County is producing light smoke that extends
toward the southeast. A fire in Madera County is producing an area of
light smoke that remains near the fire.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
