DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY

Northern California/Oregon:
Numerous smoke producing fires were seen throughout the region tonight
with most fires emitting low density smoke plumes. Among these there
were three noticeable fires that were featuring areas of moderate density
smoke. The first was located near Powers in southern Coos county and
from this fire a low to moderately dense smoke plume was seen lifting
rapidly northeast into extreme southern Linn county. The second area
of moderate smoke density was associated with a fire near Frenchglen.
The smoke from that fire was seen lifting on a general northwest heading
and extending 20 miles from its point source. The last area of moderate
density smoke was seen with a fire near Whithawk in Plumas county and
extended in both a northwest and northeast direction with the highest
density smoke mostly being confined to the northwest portion of the plume.

Southern California:
Several fires were noted along the south shore of the Salton Sea in
Imperial county. The smoke plumes from the individual fires appeared
to congeal into a larger smoke plume that was drifting west towards San
Diego county. The smoke plume was mostly low density in nature with
perhaps a few localized areas of moderate density.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
