DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z February 2, 2007

Oregon:
Many fires along Oregon's western coast are producing moderately dense
to very dense smoke. The two largest smoke plumes are found in Lincoln
and Coos counties. Smoke from these fires is extending 65 nmi to the
southwest out over the Pacific Ocean.

There are also several smaller fires in southcentral Oregon that are
producing light smoke that is mainly staying local to the fire.

California:
In northern California, throughout the Eldorado National Forest, there
are fires producing light smoke that is moving slowly in a southerly
direction.

In southeast California there are fires spread throughout Imperical
County that are producing light to moderately dense smoke that is moving
directly to the east into western Arizona.

Nevada:
A thick area of blowing dust can be seen in southern Nevada,
particularly in Esmeralda County, and is moving to the southeast along
the Nevada/California border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
