DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2215Z February 11, 2007

New Jersey:
Fires in eastern Camden and southern Burlington counties produced small
plumes of light smoke that moved east and nearly reached the coast.

South Carolina and Georgia:
Narrow plumes of thin smoke were seen with fires in Barnwell and Colleton
counties in South Carolina and Oglethorpe, Bryan and Dodge counties in
Georgia. The smoke was all drifting to the north and the plumes were
mainly less than 25 km long.

Florida:
Numerous fires were detected in northern Florida, including the panhandle,
however extensive cloudiness hindered smoke detection. The smoke observed
earlier from a fire along the Santa Rosa/Okaloosa border was masked by
clouds late in the afternoon and evening.

Mississippi and Alabama:
Several fires in southern Mississippi and Alabama were producing moderate
to dense smoke that was mainly drifting to the north. The largest fire
with the broadest and most dense smoke was along the Forrest/Stone county
border in Mississippi. This smoke had drifted 100 km into northwest Wayne
county by sunset. Additional smoke was seen from fires in northern and
northwest Mobile county Alabama and in Greene county Mississippi. A fire
along the Benton/Tippah county border in northern Mississippi had a thin
to moderate smoke plume that drifted north, reaching northeast Hardeman
county Tennessee.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
