DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0220Z February 28, 2007

Texas:
Many fires in Texas are producing thin to moderately dense plumes of
smoke, that are mianly moving to the north. The fires in Brooks county
of southern Tesas and Montgomery, Shelby and Houston countyies in western
Texas are producing significant smoke plumes.

Lower Mississippi valley(Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi):
More than 30 fires in this area are producing thin to moderately dense
plumes of smoke that are moving to the north(west of central Mississippi)
or south(east of central Mississippi). The most significant smoke plumes
are located in Allen county of central Louisiana, Franklin county of
Mississippi, and Newton, Johnson and Montgomery counties of norhtwestern
Arkansas. Especilly, the fires in northwestern Arkansas are producing
very significant smoke which has covered the northwestern corner of
Arkansas and portion of western Oklahoma.

Southeastern US(Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida):
Innumerical fires in this area are producing thin to moderately dense
plumes of smoke that are mainly moving to the south and east. There are
several fires in eastern county border of Taylor county and southeastern
Glades county are producing moderately dense to locally dense plumes
of smoke that are moving westerly across the continental areas into the
Pacific. Most of cities west of the fires are influenced.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
