DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0140Z April 1, 2007

California:
A big fire in San Bernadino county of southern California is burning and
producing a very dense plume of smoke that is fanning out to the west
and has covered large portion of southwestern corner of San Bernadino
county and central Riverside county.

Cuba:
A lot of fires along the southern coast of Cuba are producing large
areas of thin to moderately dense plumes of smoke that are moving away
from the coast to the Atlantic.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
