DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z April 3, 2007

Lower Mississippi Valley/Southern and Central Plains:
Numerous fires are burning across Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri,
and Arkansas this evening with most of these fires emitting light smoke
plumes moving northerly and staying within county borders. The largest
concentration of smoke producing fires are burning across western/central
Arkansas, northeast Oklahoma and eastern Kansas.
Fires in the counties of Montgomery, Sebastian, Logan, Johnson, Franklin,
Van Buren, Faulkner, Yell, and Pope Arkansas are producing a moderate to
thick smoke plume moving north to NNW across northern Arkansas and into
south central Missouri. Some of these fires have been burning most of
the day.
In Missouri fires in Butler and Crawford counties are producing only light
smoke, but the smoke plumes are moving into numerous counties. The Butler
fire is emitting smoke north into Wayne, Madison and Iron counties and the
Crawford county fire is emitting smoke north NE into Washington county.

In eastern Kansas fires burning in the counties of Chautauqua, Elk,
Cowley, Greenwood, Butler, Montgomery, Wilson, Coffey, Woodson, Chase
and Lyon counties are emitting long narrow light plumes of smoke moving
north NW along eastern Kansas. Some of these plumes are combining
(stretching from south to north) to make one longer plume.

In Oklahoma a fire in Pushmataha county is producing a long narrow
plume of light smoke moving north into Latimer, Pittsburg and Haskell
counties. In Latimer county a fire is emitting a plume of light smoke
moving north into Haskell, Pittsburg, McIntosh and Muskogee counties.
In Osage county light smoke from a fire is moving north across state
borders into Chautauqua county in Kansas.

Florida:
In Palm Beach county a fire is producing light to moderate smoke moving
west NW into Glades, Hendry and Highlands counties. The fire has been
producing smoke for most of the day. In Gulf County in the Florida
Panhandle a fire is emitting smoke towards the southwest into the county
of Franklin and into the Gulf of Mexico.

California/Oregon.
On the border of Modoc and Siskiyou a fire is producing a light plume
of smoke moving east. Some smoke is reaching parts of southern Oregon.
In Klamath county Oregon a light plume of smoke is moving east into Lake
county from a fire burning over the past 2-4 hours.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
