DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z April 6, 2007

Arkansas/Kansas:
Smoke from fires in Arkansas have become obscurred by clouds moving into
the area. The smoke from these fire were moving south mainly affecting
the western hills of AR and the Arkansas river valley.

Tennessee:
A fire near Napier in Lewis county has produced thin smoke that as
moved due south into AL as far as Lawrence county or about 110km from
the source. The plume is about 10km wide.

Alabama:
A fire near Doyle in the southern AL county of Marengo has produced
thin smoke that moved south about 50km into Clarke county and is about
10km wide.

Mississippi:
A fire near Sumrall in Clarke county, MS is producing moderately dense
smoke that is moving due south about 40km and is about 8km wide.

A fire near Traxler in Smith county has produced two distinct puffs of
moderately dense smoke with thinner smoke in a line about 77km to the
south of the source nearing the corner of LA/MS boarder. The plume is
about 8km wide.

A fire in northern MS along the Benton/Marshall coutny line (near Higdon
has produced a line of thin smoke throughout the day and has moved due
south nearly 250km into Webster county. The plume is about 12km wide.

Louisiana:
A fire near Rocky Branch in Union parish produced an area of thin smoke
that has become detatched from the source and is now some 50km SW of
the source extending an additional 75km SW near Summerfield in Grant
county. The width of the plume is about 24km.

Texas:
A fire near Huxley in Shelby county on the NW reaches of the Toledo
Bend Res. is producing dense to convectively dense smoke that has been
moving SW throughout the day but is beginning to shift towards the south
near the source. Still the plume extends toward the SW 137km into Tyler
county near Hyatt.

A fire near Bridge City on the northern portions of Sabine Lake is
producing moderately dense smoke plume that covers all of the Lake,
Port Arthur and Sabine Pass as it moves SW.

A fire near Arbor in Houston counties is producing a fan of moderately
dense to dense smoke that extends 70km between SW and SSW into Walker
county.

Two fires, near the NW reaches of Lake Conroe in Montgomery county
and near the Grimes/Walker/Montgomery county line are produced fans
of moderately dense smoke that is moving SW and combining into a wider
smoke plume. This plume extends about 78km into Waller county covering
the rural areas just outside SR-6 of suburban Houston.

Oregon:
A large fire in the forested hills near Crane in NW Harney county is
proudcing a fan of moderately dense smoke that is moving NE to ENE along
US-20 (and 10km each side of it) into Malheur near Harper.

Two fires in SW Grant county one near Aldrich Mtn in the Malheur Natl
Forest and the other west of the South Fork river south of Black Creek
Mtn. area producing a large area of thin to moderately dense smoke. The
highest concentrations of smoke are near the fires themselves but
smoke also is mixing in the South Fork river valley and over the higher
elevations south of US-26 across to near Fox and Long Creek.

Multiple fires along the Coastal Range along the Coos/Douglas county
line as well as NW portions of Douglas and Western Lane county are
porducing an extremely large area of thin to moderately dense smoke that
is drifting in all directions dependent on height of smoke itself. Highest
elevation smoke is moving North to NNE. Otherwise lower level smoke is
either slowly drifting North if east of the ridge line or NW out to sea
if west of the Coastal Range ridge line.

A fire in NE Lincoln county near Stott Mtn. is producing thin smoke that
is moving NW out to sea and once over the ocean turning NNW as far north
as offshore of Tillamook, OR.

Idaho:
A fire near Pine in Elmore county is producing a large area of thin
smoke that is moving due east and extends 90km to the intersection
of US20/26/93. The plume is centered along US-20 west of the
intersection... extends about 15km north and south of the road.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
