DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z April 12, 2007

Yucatan Peninsula/Mexico/Guatemala/Gulf of Mexico:
The numerous fires burning across the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico and
Guatemala during the past few days are producing a broad area of
moderate to dense smoke over the Bay of Campeche. The smoke becomes
more moderate then dense as it moves into the mid section of the Gulf of
Mexico and becomes lighter in the northern regions of the Gulf of Mexico.
Smoke extends from about 97W east to western Florida and north to around
29N nearing the Gulf Coast of the US. The smoke may extend farther north,
but is difficult to seen in GOES 11 and 12 satellite imagery where the
boundaries actually end.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
