DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1602Z April 17, 2007

Georgia/Florida/Bahamas:
A very large and intense fire surrounding the western and souther
portions of the town of Waycross in northern Ware county is producing
very dense smoke that is moving toward the SE over Jacksonville, FL where
visibilities have been low throughout the morning. The most dense smoke
extends 134km near Orange Park, FL in NE Clay county. Additional moderate
to thin smoke from the burning last night has drifted over nearly all
of Eastern and extreme Southern Florida into the northern Bahamas.

Currently the smoke covers the entirety of coastal counties of Duval,
St. John's, Flagler, and Volusia and including portions of E Putnam and
N and NE Brevard (mainly the islands/cape region north of Cocoa Beach).
Further south in Floria a tail of the thin/moderate smoke extends back
to cover the SW portion of Palm Beach, E Broward and all of eastern,
central and southern Miami-Dade county, and southern Monroe and northern
Keys (Marathon and eastward).

The smoke offshore to the Bahamas is bound by 29N80W to 28.5N77W to 26N77W
to 25N79W to 25N81W where it is described above. This affects Grand
Bahama, Abaco, the Berry Islands, Bimini Islands and extreme northern
Andros Island.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
