DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0220Z April 23, 2007

Southeast and The Bahamas:
The huge fire in southern Ware County in southern Georgia produced a
large area of very dense smoke that extended to the northwest. The smoke
thinned over eastern Alabama and northern Georgia.

Narrow plumes of thin smoke streaked northward from fires in eastern
Tennessee, southwestern Virginia and Kentucky.

Light and moderate smoke from a fire in the Bahamas in southern Abaco
Islands drifted southward.

Mexico/Gulf of Mexico:
Numerous fires in southeast Mexico/Yucatan Peninsula produced a large
area of moderate and light smoke that extended northward over the western
Gulf of Mexico to southeastern Texas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
