DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z April 27, 2007

Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Yucatan Peninsula
A large area of thin to moderately dense smoke covers the entire
SW portion of the Gulf of Mexico (south of Baffin Bay TX), the Bay
of Campeche and extends SE to the Yucatan Peninsula (where the origin
fires are burning from Tabasco across all the Peninsula with a bulk of
the fires in N Guatemala). The smoke then is being pulled northeastward
along a draping frontal boundary and extends about 175km either side of
a line from Panama City Beach Florida to 26N90W to 22N93W where it merges
with the large area of slightly higher density aforementioned smoke.

Georgia:
Moderate to dense smoke continues to be emitted by the Big Turnaround
Fire Complex to the SE of Waycross, GA in Ware county. The smoke has
been moving due NNE nearly all day extending nearly 200km to the SC/GA
boarder near Sylvania in Screven county. The plume is relatively thin
at about 18km at its widest.
A new fire near Raybon in Brantley county along US-301 has produced
thin to moderately dense smoke that has been entrained into a developing
towering cumulus cloud along the sea breeze boundary and has been lifted
into the middle to upper atmosphere and is moving NE rapidly to around
Ossabaw Island and is about 15km wide. The lower level smoke similar
to the Big Turnaround fire is moving due north but is obscurred by smoke
from the Big Turnaround fire and approaching convective cloud blowoff.

Louisiana:
A fire near Savage Fork/Caney area of Vernon parish is producing very
thin smoke that is drifting E in a 13km wide plume that extends about
50km into Allen parish.

Kansas:
A fire W of Belvidere in Kiowa county, a fire near the Mule River along
the Comanche/Barber county line, and a fire near Lake City in W Barber
county are all producing smoke plumes that extend about 30km to the
SE and are about 10km wide. This has covered most of W Barber county.
Other fires in the area are producing similar plume but are currently
obscurred by approaching high cirrus clouds.

New Mexico:
A fire near Reserve in the Tularosa Mts. has recently increased smoke
output with moderate to high density. The plume currently extends aobut
70km ENE nearing the Catron/Soccoro line near north of Dusty. It is also
about 12km near the source, but fans out to about 20km near the boarder.
A second fire recently sent a puff of thin to moderate smoke moving NW
from the SW portion of Eddy county in the Lincoln Nat'l Forest/Gaudalupe
Mts. just to the west of the Carlsbad Nat'l Park.

Oregon:
A fire near Sitkum in Coos county is producing a V-shaped plume of
moderate smoke with one wing moving due E to the bank of the highest
mtn peaks along the county line and the other wing moving due N to the
county line near (just east of) Reedsport.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
