DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z May 03, 2007

Southeast:
Intense blaze in Atkinson County, Georgia, is producing an extremely
dense smoke plume up to 55 nmi to the east northeast. A massive area
of light to isolated moderate smoke stretched from the northeastern Gulf
of Mexico across the Southeast Coastal Plain and adjacent coastal waters
to North Carolina.

A fire in Lake County, Florida, produced a light smoke plume that extended
50 nmi to the west southwest before being eclipsed by light to moderate
smoke that extended 75 nmi to the west, southwest and south of a fire
in southern Flagler County. The densest smoke associated with this fire
was moving east over the Atlantic.

Early in the afternoon a fire on the McDowell-Burke County border in
North Caroline produced a light smoke plume that moved east prior to
the arrival of clouds from the west.

Upper Mississippi Valley:
Numerous controlled burns were generating brief, light clouds of smoke
that were generally moving towards the west and northwest.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
