DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z May 04, 2007

Manitoba and Minnesota:
A fire in northern Kittson County, Minnesota is producing a moderate
smoke plume that extends northward toward Winnipeg. The smoke appears to
currently continue until just south or southwest of Winnipeg. The fire
began to emit smoke at about 2030Z and the smoke might soon extend even
further northward.

Southeastern U.S. and Atlantic Ocean:
Fires in southern Flagler County, Florida and Atkinson County, Georgia
have produced large areas of moderate to dense smoke today but the
Atkinson County fire seems to be producing less smoke this evening. The
Flagler County fire continues to emit dense smoke that extends westward
into northern Volusia County as well as eastward about 50NM over the
Atlantic. These areas of dense smoke are embedded in much larger areas of
light to moderate smoke mixed with haze covering much of northern Florida
and the adjacent area of the Gulf, southeastern Georgia, the coastal
regions of the Carolinas and southeastern Virginia, and the Atlantic
within 50NM of South Carolina, North Carolina, and southern Virginia
and then the smoke follows a frontal boundary going further offshore.

Western Gulf of Mexico:
A light to moderate mix of haze and smoke (from many days of Yucatan
fires) covers much of the southwestern Gulf of Mexico especially west
of 92W. The smoke can also be seen onshore throughout the Gulf coast
states of Mexico but is especially dense in Tabasco.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
