DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z May 05, 2007

Southeast:

The fire near the Volusia-Flagler border in Florida was generating a light
to moderate plume of smoke that extended 55 nmi to the northwest. Some
light smoke was observed moving north from the blaze in Atkinson County,
Georgia. Analysis in this area was hindered by extensive cloud cover,
however; so smoke may be more widespread.

Residual smoke from these fires was identifiable in the Atlantic off
the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia as well as across the Straits
of Florida.

Western Gulf Coast States:

Light residual smoke from fires in Central America was moving north
across the western Gulf of Mexico into Texas and Louisiana.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
