DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0220Z May 11, 2007

Georgia, Florida, the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico:
The larege fires in Mare county of southern Georgia and Baker county of
northern Florida are producing a large area of very thick smoke that is
moving southwesterly to the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the subtropical
system portion of the smoke has been brought back to west of central
Florida. Therefore, almost the northwestern quarter of Florida except
Florida Panhandle are covered by the very dense plume of smoke. The
residual smoke from several days ago and this morning has been brought
to the Pacific coast areas near Carolinas, Georgia, and Flordia by the
subtropical system. Two fires in central and western of Collier county
of southern Florida respectively are producing moderately dense plumes
of smoke that are moving easterly across Broward county into te Pacific.

Minnesota and Ontario and Quebec of Canada:
The big fires along US-Canada border at northern Minnesota are producing
locally very dense plumes of smoke that are moving to the east then
south and has crossed Lake Superior and reached upper Michigan. The
big fire west of Lake Nipigon is producing a very dense plume of smoke
that is moving southeasterly then easterly and has covered a large
area of Ontario, which is south to Lake Superior and 220 miles east
Lake Nipigon. The residual smoke from yesterday formed a belt area and
has moved from eastern Ontario to western Quebec. A fire in St. Louis
of northern Minnesota is producing a thin to moderately dnese plume
of thin smoke that is moving southeasterly then southerly across the
Minnesota-Wisconsin boundary into northwestern Wisconsin.

Montana, Idaho, and South of British Columbia:
Three fires in northwestern Montana, northern Idaho, and southern British
Columbia respcetively are producing thin to moderately dense plumes of
smoke that are moving northeasterly.

Oregon:
Four fires in Josephine, Klamath, Douglas, and Lake counties are
producing thin to moderately dense plumes of smoke that are mainly
moving northeasterly.

California and Santa Catalina Island:
A fire in western Plumas county is producing a moderately dense plume
of smoke that is moving northeasterly across Lassen county into Washoe
county of Nevada. A fire in southern Santa Catalina Island is producing
a locally dense plume of smoke that is fanning out to the east and has
reached the California coast area at Orange county.

Dust in California and Nevada:
Blowing dust is observed in satellite imagery at Lander county of Nevada
and San Bernardino county of California.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
