DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z May 16, 2007

Southeastern US:

Dense smoke stretches from 160 nmi southeast to 375 nmi northeast of fires
along the Georgia/Florida border or roughly from the northeast Gulf of
Mexico to central North Carolina. Light residual smoke extended across
the Mid Atlantic and southern New England out into the Atlantic Ocean.
Moderate to dense residual smoke was also present from Louisiana south
across the central Gulf of Mexico with lighter smoke further to the west.

Arizona:

A smoke plume extended 105 nmi to the north of a fire in the Tonto
National Forest near the Coconino/Gila county border.

New Jersey:

Smoke extended 105 nmi to the east northeast of fires in Ocean County.

Alaska/Canada/US:

A large amount of haze of unknown composition and origin stretched from
the Arctic Ocean across central Alaska, central Yukon and central Canada
southeastward across the central US east of the Continental Divide.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
