THROUGH 1430Z May 18, 2007

Southeast:

Residual dense smoke from fires in Georgia and Florida stretches from the
northeast Gulf of Mexico across northern Florida and into the Atlantic.

Arizona:

A narrow plume of light smoke extends north from the blaze in the Tonto
National Forest.

Alaska:

Haze of unknown composition and origin covers much of the northern
two-thirds of Alaska.

Pacific Northwest/Northern Rockies/Northern and Central Plains:

Haze of unknown composition and origin is streaming northeastward from
the Pacific into northern California, northwest Nevada and Idaho before
turning southeastward across the Northern and Central Plains.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
