DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z May 19, 2007

Florida, Georgia, and neighboring areas:
Smoke (largely from the Big Turnaround fire near the border of Charlton
and Ware Counties in Georgia) is moving toward the west, southwest
and south. The smoke is dense in Charlton and neighboring counties and
moderate elsewhere. It covers most of Florida north of about 27 north and
is rapidly extending further south into Florida. In Alabama, currently
only the southeasternmost part of the state is affected. In the Gulf,
the smoke has reached about 88W and is moving rapidly further west.

Western Mexico and Pacific Ocean:
Fires in southern Mexico have produced moderate to dense smoke with the
densest smoke in northern Guerrero and western Michoacan and off the
coast of Guerrero. The smoke is moving southwestward slowly. The smoke
over the Pacific is moderate to dense especially between 100 and 105W
and between 15N and 19N.

Northern Mexico:
A fire at about 31N111W is producing a narrow moderate smoke plume that
extends northward slightly into southern Santa Cruz County in Arizona.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
