THROUGH 0200Z May 20, 2007

Southeast US:
The large wildfires throughout Charlton and Ware counties of southeastern
Georgia continue to produce massive amounts of very dense smoke.
The most dense smoke is found in southern Georgia, and moving to the
southeast across northern Florida and into the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
Light to moderately dense smoke from these fires is found covering most of
the eastern Gulf of Mexico, almost all of Florida, and parts of southern
Alabama and Mississippi.

Louisiana:
Several fires in southeast Louisiana are producing light to moderately
dense smoke that is moving to the southwest and crossing into eastern
parts of Texas.

Arizona/Mexico:
A fire in northern Sonora of Mexico has been producing moderately dense
to dense smoke throughout the day that is moving to the north and has
reached southern Arizona.

California:
A large fire in Los Padres National Forest broke out late in the evening
and is producing dense to very dense smoke that is moving to the south
and spreading to the east, affecting most of Los Angeles county and

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
