DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z May 22, 2007

Southeast/Gulf of Mexico:

The Bugaboo and Turnaround Complex fires in S GA and N FL (particularly
in GA) continue to produce abundant amounts of smoke. Moderately dense
smoke from last night and this morning covers nearly all of S AL/GA/and
W SC... as the plume is curved sharply due to stronger easterly winds
across FL...and stagnant or light W winds over N GA and SC. Two main
lines or arcs of smoke can be seen, the first extends from Greensville,
SC to Gainsville, GA to Atlanta,GA and begins to fade to thin smoke near
Montgomery, AL...this line is a bit higher in elevation than the second
that extends from the fires(Waycross, GA) to Douglas, GA to Dublin,GA
to Thomson, GA to Lake Murray or just NW of Columbia, SC.

This morning very strong easterly winds off the ocean have reached the
fires and have lead to eruptive smoke that is very dense in a very narrow
line from 30.86N 82.42W (in the fire) to around Moody Air Force Base,
just north of Valdosta, GA.

Arizona:
Thin smoke from the Promontory Fire along the Gila and Coconino county
line is moving NE into SW Navajo county, the plume is about 5km wide
and extends about 62km.

Northwest Territories, Canada:
An area of thin smoke from unknown origin (most likely Siberia, though
not confirmed) covers all of NW Northwest Territories between the Yukon
boarder and Great Bear Lake as far south as 64N.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
