DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z May 25, 2007

Southeast/Mississippi Valley/Great Lakes:
A large area of thin and moderate smoke extended from the Bugaboo and
Turnaround fire in SE Georgia to the Lower Mississippi Valley, then
northward to the Great Lakes and SE Canada. Very dense smoke covered S
Georgia, the Florida Panhandle and SE Alabama while moderately dense
smoke was visible from Mississippi/W Tennessee to S Illinois. Fires
in Collier County in S Florida caused light and moderately dense smoke
that moved westward to the Gulf of Mexico. A fire in W Osceola County
in central Florida produced a plume of thin smoke that moved westward
to Polk and Hillsborough Counties. Plumes of thin smoke drifted mostly
to the northwest from fires in N Greensville/S Appomattox Counties in
S Virginia, N Scotland County in SE North Carolina and S Greene County
in NE Tennessee.

Gulf of Mexico:
Light and moderate smoke from the fires in S Mexico moved northward over
the SW Gulf to southern Texas.

SE Canada:
A large fire in SW Quebec produced a plume of heavy smoke that move off
to the northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
