DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z May 27, 2007

Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee:
The fires in southeastern Georgia are producing heavy smoke that extends
westward along the Georgia-Florida border. Tallahassee and areas west of
Tallahassee have been under moderate to heavy smoke throughout much of
the day. In the tri-state area the smoke becomes moderate and curves
northward covering much of the eastern half of Alabama. Light smoke
appears to extend even further northward possibly affecting Tennessee.

Quebec:
Five fire areas, at 48N 76W, 49N 71W, 50N 73W, 50N 66W and 50N 71W,
are producing light to moderate with occasional heavy smoke plumes that
extend eastward. The fires at 48N 76W, 49N 71W and 50N 73W are more
persistent and are producing the larger smoke plumes.

Alaska:
Fires continue in central Alaska and earlier today a mix of haze and
leftover smoke could be seen in northwestern Alaska. Now however partly
due to cloud cover it is difficult to determine whether smoke persists.
An exception is the fire at 67N149W which has a light to moderate smoke
plume that extends toward the west northwest.

Mexico:
Numerous fires in Sinaloa, Chihuahua and Durango are producing light to
moderate smoke mostly in western Durango and southwestern Chihuahua. There
are also small areas of heavy smoke in Durango. The smoke tends to
be moving eastward. Despite fairly numerous Yucatan fires the Gulf of
Mexico and southeastern Mexico seem to be relatively smoke-free.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
