DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z May 30, 2007

Southeastern US:
The large fire complex in southeast Georgia continues to produce massive
amounts of dense to very dense smoke. The densest smoke is extending
nearly 170 nmi to the west and reaching southeastern Alabama, but light
smoke and residual smoke from yesterday/last night can be seen moving
to the north through almost all of Alabama, moving straight through
Tennessee and into central Kentucky.

A fire on the border of Gilchrist and Alachua counties of northern Florida
is producing a plume of light to moderately dense smoke that extends to
the west and just reaches Florida's Gulf Coast.

A large fire flared up early this evening on the northwestern edge of
Lake Okeechobee in Glades County. Moderately dense smoke can be seen
moving to the west and extending into the Gulf of Mexico.

Utah/Arizona:
In southern Coconino County of central Arizona a fire is producing a
very lengthy plume of light to moderately dense smoke that is moving to
the east reaching just past the Arizona and New Mexico border.

In southern Utah a fire began producing moderately dense smoke late in
the evening that is moving southeast into northern Arizona.

Oregon/Idaho:
On Oregon's central Pacific Coast a fire has been producing moderately
dense to dense smoke throughout most of the day. It stayed fairly close
to the fire until late in the evening where it spread out moving west
over the Pacific Ocean.

In western Oregon, a fire in Grant County began producing moderately
dense smoke late in the evening that is spreading in multiple directions
from the actual fire, affecting several surrounding counties.

In southern Idaho, a fire in Owyhee County is producing moderately
dense smoke that is spreading out as it moves to the south into northern
New Mexico.

Canada:
A large fire in nothern Alberta, just northwest of Lake Claire, in Buffalo
National Park is producing moderately dense to dense smoke that is moving
to the northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
