DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z June 3, 2007

Central Canada/Northern US Plains:
A large swath of thin smoke can be seen across nearly all of the northern
2/3rds of Alberta, all but the NE corner of Saskatchewan, all of Manitoba,
south of the northern tip of Lake Winnipeg), far SW Ontario near the
Lake of the Woods into the US. In the US the smoke covers all of North
Dakota, South Dakota, the eastern 1/5th of Montana and NW Minnesota.
This smoke is from the significant fires burning across northern Alberta
and is moving SE across Canada and then turning nearly due south (along
the eastern side of the upperlevel ridge) across the northern Great
Plains. The thickest area of smoke, maybe to moderate density extends
between the southern portions of Lake Manitoba and Winnipeg to along
the Red River to the SD boarder.

Gulf of Mexico:
Very faint smoke can be seen across the northeastern portions of the
GoM from emissions from the GA fires earlier this week. It is very faint
and covers the Panhandle of Florida and the entire NE GoM bound by 88W
to the west, 25N to the south and the west coast of FL. The smoke is
moving due east under the influence of ex-Barry.

Northern Mexico:
Thin smoke from numerous fires along the spine of the Sierra Madre
Occidental in the Mexican states of SW Chihuahua, NW Durago and extreme
eastern Sinaloa has moved toward the NE covering most of S Chihuahua
and along the Coahuila boarder toward the Big Bend region of Texas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
