DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z June 3, 2007

Florida/Georgia/Surrounding Waters:
A large area of thin to moderately dense smoke from burning of the
Bugaboo fire this week before the rain is detectable across the NE Gulf
of Mexico, all of Florida, most of Georgia, parts of SW South Carolina
and Atlantic Ocean. The smoke is bound by 25N86W to 26N80W to 30N76W
to Charleston, SC to the NC/GA boarder to Columbus, GA to Valparaiso,
FL back to 25N86W. The most dense areas are areas where the smoke
is moving slower due to weaker winds (SW portions of the plume to the
Western coast of Florida). The entire area is moving due east under the
influence of ex-Barry.

The Bugaboo fire has a narrow plume of smoke that extends from the only
active area near Williamsburg, GA in E Clinch county (30.8N82.5W). The
plume is moving due E in a 14km wide plume over 250km...or about 150km
due east of the GA coastline near High Point in Camden county.

California:
A new fire near just north of Kernville but in Tulare county within
Sequoia Nat'l forest is producing moderate to dense smoke that is moving
E to ESE along the county line to about US-395 and is about 15km wide.
A fire in the eastern Valley in Tulare county near Worth is producing an
area of smoke that is drifting in all directions, though mostly toward
the mtns from S to NE.

Canada/Northern US Great Plains:
Thin smoke from prior day's fire emissions from northern Alberta looks
like a crescent as it rounds the northeastern portion of the upper-level
ridge affecting the northern US Rockies. This area covers all of
southern Saskatchewan, Manitoba then turns south across North Dakota
with the end of the crescent over the western half of South Dakota,
with a little bit peaking across the SD/NE line around Cherry county.

Alberta:
A fire near the Thickwood Hills to the WNW of Fort McMurray is producing
moderate to dense smoke is moving toward the SE and extends more than
120km with an average width around 25km.
A fire NE of Garden Creek in the Buffalo Nat'l Park in is producing a
large fan of smoke that extends SW to SSE as far south as the Birch Mtns.

Saskatchewan:
The fire SW of the SW tip of Reindeer Lake just to the NW of The Two
Rivers (town name) is producing a line of thick smoke that is moving
SSE in a plume that extends more than 200km nearly to the Manitoba line.
Additionally new fires along an E-W line just north of the 56th parallel
out to around the Foster River. These fires have recently begun producing
moderate to thick smoke which is melding into a larger area of thin to
moderate smoke between 55N and 56N, 106W to 103W.

Mexico:
Copious amounts of dense smoke are erupting from numerous wildfires in the
forested areas of extreme SW Chihuahua and NW Durango states...nearly
covering all of the forested areas to the west of the main Mexican
Plateau. The smoke is moving nearly due east from each fire...so the
area looks striped with grey/whitish smoke overlaying the darker trees.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
