DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z June 16, 2007

Quebec:
The large group of fires in central Quebec continue producing dense to
very dense smoke that is staying local to the source, but slowly moving
to the northeast into New Foundland.

Alberta:
The large fire in northeast Alberta, just west of Lake Athabasca is
producing dense smoke that is moving to the south and to the the east.

Central US:
Light haze/smoke can be seen between the Great Lakes Region and the
Lower Mississippi Valley. The cause of this is a mixture of residual
smoke from the Quebec fires and residual smoke from the agricultural
fires along the lower Mississippi River.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
